If you ever have the pleasure of coming to my house for a cuppa tea and a chinwag, have a look at my itunes at the most played songs. These 3 bands are top of the list, along with Hot Club De Paris (keeps me smiling) and Dirty Money (keeps me thuggin’). I didn’t think I’d get a chance to see all 3 play at the same venue but luck’s on my side.

This Friday at the Hobgoblin pub in Brighton is where the magic is going down, and then the next day at the Old Blue Last in London. If you can get to the Brighton show do go because it’ll be the better gig of the two. Shows at the Hobgoblin just tend to be more fun, maybe it’s the seaside effect. HOTWHEELS CHRIS IS A ROCKSTAR!

James, Mark and myself have just returned from a wild road trip to Koln via Rotterdam, partially for the Masters but mainly for the crack. Also in the van was Lorenzo Reid, Jason Phelan, Leon Perkins and Chris from Hotwheels who did all the driving and paid for the roof over our heads and the lavatory for our excrement. Chris is a real good dude, but that by no means meant he was immune from getting fucked with.

I don’t know if this is porn, but here’s a photo of Chris showering when we burst in and Renzo covered him with Rockstar. Chris’s response: “Imagine if you’d burst in and I’d been having a wank on all fours'’.

Being in a van for hours is often not the most inspiring thing in the world. You get your hair set on fire, people fart loads and getting lost can often occur. I had just had a god old chinwag with Leon Perkins about the history of bmx and the state of bmx at the moment when I turned to the new Dig floating around in the car (along with gallons of stinking arse gas) and saw Lino Gonzales’ interview.

He’s an articulate dude who’s obviously pretty bright, and what he says about bmx and suchlike is bang on the money. Plus he has a wife which I find amazing. Make sure you read it because I fully buzzed off it knowing that a rider I respect a lot has the same outlook on things as me and it is genuinely interesting.

100 MILES OFFROAD ON A BMX?

Some of you may remember this guy from the Photo of the Week section earlier in the year - well, Dan’s now decided to turn his hand away from doing boooooosted airs and more towards a 100 mile offroad BMX ride (Brakeless!) for a 100% worthy cause…

To give you the details, here’s the release Dan wrote to be featured on the PijinBlog:

“Hi Everyone,

As I’ve probably mentioned to a lot of you already, Soph and I, along with some friends of ours, are planning to ride the South Downs way this weekend. The South Downs way is around 100 miles long from Eastbourne to Winchester and we plan to cycle it in two days, in order to raise some money for the charity project of a good friend of ours.

The idea to do this came a couple of months ago after we watched a promotional video produced by our friend, Dave Attwood, for a charity project that he has recently spent a great deal of time setting up. Dave is a doctor working on the Isle of Wight; he spent a few months last year working in a hospital in Malawi and was drawn to Africa and it’s people, whilst being increasingly concerned with it’s plight. As a result he decided that he would like to use his time, skills and enthusiasm to do something to help. After speaking to a colleague of his in the Isle of Wight, who is originally from Africa, a plan was formed to try to help one of the parts of the country that is struggling the most, Sudan. The plan being to establish a training hospital in a town called Juba in Southern Sudan. Dave went about gaining support for the project, including the twinning of the hospital in Juba with the hospital he is currently working in on the Isle of Wight. Dave and some colleagues recently visited the Juba hospital and he plans to return to Juba for around four Months starting this August.

Dave’s enthusiasm, generosity and big ideas have always been a source of inspiration to me and in light of the huge amount of time and effort that Dave has dedicated to this project, I thought the least I could do was try not to kill myself riding a very long way off-road in a short period of time on my BMX.

I got to see the hospital video too, and the work that they’re doing over there is amazing. It really puts life into perspective when you see how hard people have to fight to survive in another part of the world as you try and work out what type of grips you’re going to buy next.

Like the ad always says, “every little helps“. This is a chance to contribute what to you is a small amount of money, but to them a large amount, and help a really, really worthy cause.

Sometimes it doesn’t really register with people that we do in fact have a strong Hip Hop culture here in the UK. It is fully developed & mature.

Our MCs can stand up lyrically with the world’s finest spoken word artists. We have a long history of DJ, Bboy & Beatbox Champions. We have some of the world’s leading Graffiti artist coming from our shores. UK Hip Hop sections can be found in record shops all across Europe. Even the industry here are starting to catch on (and they are always the last to know)

Was he a fluke? I don’t think so people. We don’t need fools like Simon Cowell to tell us that Britain has talent!! Its obvious, we showcased it monthly for years at Speakers Corner and never showed any signs of struggling to fill our stage with inspirational artists.

Now we are half way through the second season of the international EOW MC Challenge UK Heats. We have two champions for our final already in the bag, two more to come. NEXT HEAT JULY 3RD @ Rhythm Factory!! Competition is already tough. We have full footage of the first two heats up already including all the rounds & guest acts plus some bonus footage, podcast & free LP downloads.

Being International Championship title holders means for EOW:UK this season (our second season) that we hold host to the International MC Challenge of Champions & International showcase this coming October. We will have Champions coming over from the USA, Germany, Spain, France, Brazil, Argentina and Ireland!! We will also have guests from Africa, Australia, Japan, China and Iran, plus headlining artists DJ Premier, Jedi Mind Tricks and Big Daddy Kane!! Legends in the game!! And what will be the first ever truly international Hip Hop showcase and conference in Hip Hop history!!

This is where you come in. We need your support at a local level to spread the word about the tournament. We are proud of our position in this challenge and are preparing to welcome the Hip Hop world into our capital city. We want you to be proud too.

We are in the midst of a renaissance; this season’s EOW has the capability to act as a catalyst. Invite your family. Listen to Hot Club De Paris. Another band from Liverpool who I’m plugging, but as far as I’m concerned this is no bad thing. They have a new album out called Live at Dead Lake, chock full of catchy and upbeat songs which are actually well written and insightful, not just cheerful nothingness. It was also produced by Brian Deck, the same dude who produces Modest Mouse, so you know shit’s tight. Their Minutemen cover is a belter, as is their single and my song of the week Hey Housebrick. LIVE FAST DIE

Is the name of an awesome FBM video from days gone by. I’ve been getting mighty nostalgic of late, reminiscing about back in the day, how things change and suchlike. But watching that vid made me stoked to ride again, despite my lacklustre performance today.

Speaking of FBM, they have a bunch of rad new shirts out, as well as some spanking frames up to their usual standard, including the Exodus, pictured above. Oh, and in case you haven’t heard, FBM have entered into the complete bikes market. I’m gonna no comment that, although the bikes do look real nice and have gnarly names. Are the days of Fire, Beer and Mayhem all a thing of the past? Judging by their upcoming Gypsy Caravan tour, it looks like they’re still going strong.
