MYSTRO “F.D.T.” E.P.
The Mighty Mystro, MysDiggi, Digmund Freud - whatever name you give him, we can all agree that he is one of the most respected emcees to come on to the scene in the last decade. And he’s not just limited to being a natural born spitter; those who have checked his recent “Mystro Investigates” series will know what I’m talking about. (Those who don’t, hit up his site)
His spitting is what this is all about though, as this month sees the release of his latest lab creation: the “F.D.T.” EP. Luckily for us Mystro seems to always bring the tightest deliveries to everything and if anything he has only upped his game, during the hiatus since his last releases, a couple of years ago.
With seven full length tracks on the EP - plus three F.D.T. Radio skits - there’s enough room for Mystro to cram in all the necessary elements: punchlines, storytelling, battle rhymes and a bit of social commentary; that’s guaranteed to keep you all enthralled. Winter-bashing-piano-blessed-carnival-vibes, from Super T start things off with “The Truth“, and then things get taken down a notch by production team Earth Hip Hop on “Live & U Learn“. Here Mys combines his storytelling prowess with some commentary on some of the bigger wasters in this world: all those cheats and fakers out there.
DJ Thor is on board for two of the beats on the EP and my favourite is probably “Thorish“; again a nice use of piano plus some sweet cuts, gives Mystro the ideal backdrop for his lyrical assault. Another switch up in styles completes the cut, with “Aquarius” and “The Urge“. The former is arguably the best track on the album; Super T’s hazy beat, with its bells and synths, has a real relaxed feel and Mystro saves his most conscious lyrics to air his grievances on this most confusing world. Sinister is the theme for “The Urge“, complete with big drums and maniacal laughter. Rage-fuelled lyrics and a hook that proclaims “I ain’t a killer, but I do get the urge”, laced over yet another masterful - and murky - Super T beat, send the album out on a raw note.
Overall this is a great EP, with a nice range of accomplished beats and a lyrical standard you’ve come to expect from Mystro. Looking forward to seeing what 2010 has in store for him. The “F.D.T.” EP is going to be available to download on 14 December from all good digi download spots.
