DJ TLM & BRAINInspired by the world’s number one DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Philly’s other pride Cash Money, TLM is keeping it real since his 16th birthday when his drumkit made place for his first DJ setup. Still spinning vinyl on his Serato Scratch Live system he’s reppin’ it for real hiphop. TLM has got turntabling flowing through his veins and with over 15 years of club experience he knows what good DJ-ing is. He has been playing basketball for the past ten years, used to rap when he was younger and has been MC Brainpower’s DJ and back-up mc for the last 11 years. A hardcore hiphop artist I’d say.

DJ TLM 2In 1996 TLM decided he needed some publicity, so he created a mixtape showing his music choice and his DJ skills. This was the first of a series of 10 called Da Bass-ment, named after the room where the equipment was stalled and many many sessions went down. In 1997 rap formation The Proov asked TLM to be their permanent DJ. That is when he started playing for show audiences, and at every gig he included a turntablism showcase, which would later give him many opperatunities for putting scratches on big peoples tracks.

In 1998 this collaboration ended and TLM teamed up with Brainpower. Brainpower chose to enter the country’s most prestigious comptetion called ‘The Great Prize of the Netherlands (De Grote prijs van Nederland)’. They came back with The Great Prize, The Audience Choice Prize, Best DJ and Best Rapper. Basicly they then instantly became the biggest names in the Dutch hiphop scene. That’s over 10 years ago and still TLM is one of the best DJ’s of the Nation, ready to deliver knowledge to the new generation of music fans living the hiphop life.

Time for some action, time for some questions:

    - Why is it, you think, you’re still on top of the DJ-game?

DJ TLM MJLove. I just love this so much. If I’m not playing in a club, I’m on stage with Brainpower and if I‘m not on doing a mix show on the radio, I’m working on a mixtape. You just have to keep doing it.

    - You have done shows with both Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money, please tell us some cool/funny/interesting/secret stories from back then.

Hmm, all I can say is that they are both real down to earth laidback type of dudes. I met Jazzy Jeff in 1998 at his Touch of Jazz studio in Philly and a couple of years later I was DJ-ing at Bassline in Paradiso (Amsterdam) and he also did a set. I didn’t get the chance to talk to him that time though.

I’ve done a couple of gigs with Cash Money. Last time the organiser of the party (legendary DJ All Star Fresh) put us both on the spot by making us do freestyle routines. I definitely felt nervous doing a routine after Cash Money!! But it went just fine J

    - You have been turning for years at a very respectable level, how come you never really made it internationally, didn’t try?

To tell you the truth, I never tried as hard as I should have been. I was working so much in The Netherlands that I didn’t take the time to explore other options outside The Netherlands. Lately I’ve been promoting myself through my YouTube videos and I’m getting a lot of positive feedback from all over the world. My focus is shifting more and more towards other countries. I’m currently in contact with promoters from a few different countries so we’ll see what happens.

    - Coming from the age when battling was essential in hiphop, what is your opinion on the current scenario where the audience and even KRS ONE are trying to force a lyrical war between 50 Cent and Jay Z ?

You can’t force it and I do feel that the whole ‘beef’ element has gotten corny. You see a lot of people talking shit just to get some attention. But in the case of 50 vs Jay I think it would be a good thing because you’re dealing with two cats that know how to ‘keep it Hip Hop’ and just drop some dope verses on vinyl. Nas vs Jay gave Hip Hop a Boost. This battle might do the same.

    - You have been with Brainpower for a long time, he is dropping an English album in 2010, will this reach the world?

For sure! Brainpower delivers quality music, good Hip Hop music. There is always going to be a demand for good music.

DJ TLM MIC- You and Brainpower will stay together for sure, you have got your own thing going with Represent Radio Live, can we expect long term collaborations with other artists in the near future? If not, why not?

You never know what the future holds for me. I’m also a producer (I’ve done a couple of tracks on Brainpowers last two albums and produced his latest single) and it is possible that I’ll do entire albums with other artists, but it won’t be in the near future because I’m working in too much stuff right now.

    - Roughly guessing, how many vinyl records have you got?

I haven’t counted them in a long time and I recently got rid of at least 8 crates of vinyl (lot of weak promo joints and records I’ll never play again), but I still have at least 10.000 records.

    - How and where can our readers follow your every move?

    youtube.com/djtlm

    (optional question)

    - You used to drum, you record a lot of videos, could you record a drum set?

I haven’t had a drum set since I was 16 years old! J Buying an electronic drum set is on my wish list so I’ll definitely drum again in the future. When that time comes I’ll record a set for you ;)
