END OF THE WEAK MC CHALLENGE LAUNCHES IN UGANDA

eowdubEODub (End Of the Weak) was founded in 2000 as one of the few weekly platforms in NYC where hungry MCs could showcase and hone their talent. What started as a small Open Mic in the back of a restaurant has grown into the longest-running weekly hip-hop show in NYC and an International Hip-Hop movement. EODub now has chapters all over the world including: France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Spain and the UK. Amy Hume reports back from the first ever MC Challenge in Africa...

PARA - RESCUE ME/HIGH SPEED DUBBING

PARA - RESCUE MEA few days ago I woke up with quite a hangover, feeling bad. Walked to the front door and there were CD's waiting for me, but also an unannounced 7”inch Para single. While fixin' breakfast I decided to play this Breakin Bread 10 year aniversary celebration record on my kitchen deck which normally is only used for Glenn Miller kinda sounds... I did not expect it to be this good! It absolutely surprised me and improved my mood by a million times. Rescue Me on Side A involves great funky breaks and Motown vocals that made me want to just go back to the house I was at that night and drink all the left over booze and have a private party with my new single. Side B, High Speed Dubbing, carries on where Rescue Me stops, cranks up the tempo and hypes up the solo dancing some more. 7:26 minutes later I returned to my breakfast routine and began the day with a big smile on me face. DEZ MAARSEN VS. RAPHAEL CHIQUET

[vimeo]http://www.vimeo.com/2798856[/vimeo] The Last Battle Of The Year (TLBOTY) found place in Amsterdam on 27 December. Dez Maarsen who deserves a lot of props, not only did he organise this event, as you can see in this video he sure is one hell of a rider and I personally think he won this one.

EXCLUSIVE: JYAGER “ENCRYPTED SCRIPTURES” ALBUM REVIEW

jyagerSo we're only into the first few weeks of 2009 and already I have found a contender for album of the year. Jyager is the name and murdering verses is his game. The name might ring a bell in a few heads out there as he did a guest spot on Jehst's "Mengi Bus Mixtape", a couple of years back. Well once again it's the High Plains Drifter who is responsible for this formal introduction to Jyager, as YNR Productions are the label representing and from the moment the first beat drops you can tell why. We may be being slightly premature here because the album doesn't actually drop for another two months, but when I hit up Google for anything Jyager related, the results were scarce and there was fuck all for the album, so I thought "Oh snap! We got ourselves an exclusive!" And what an exclusive it is...

    UGLY DUCKLING - AUDACITY LP

AudacityAndy, Dizzy and Young Einstein deliver another musically different, total independent, 12 tracks counting, boundaries pushing record. This time the trio got a bit more personal, but U.D. wouldn't be themselves if they did not inject the listener with some funny shit, laugh is the message and humour is the way, it's the same old Duckling package but the roughness got a shave. The productions are better, the hooks are way better and the overall package brings the future expectations of them to a higher standard. I am no Ugly Duckling fan at all but even I must admit these guys got balls and just keep doing what they love whether it pays or not. The music genre is not clear, some things just can not be put in boxes. The only resembling sound I can come up with is DJ Format in collaboration with Abdominal. The samples used on the record are just amazing, it must have been a massive search to find some of the used characteristic, soulfull sounds. The best thing about Audacity are the love for the music and the shitload of trumpets !!! ALBUM IN STORES 19th OF JANUARY 2009

    ESLAM JAWAAD “REWIND DJ” REVIEW

eslamjawaadEslam Jawaad is a name you may have come across already. If you copped The Good, The Bad & The Queen's album, then you will have heard the track "Mr Whippy" and so you would've heard Eslam dropping science about our fair capital city. A lot has happened since then and Eslam has been propelled to heady new heights, leading to the forthcoming release of his debut album, "The Mammoth Tusk" and the first single, "Rewind DJ".

DJ IQ & ASAVIOUR RELEASE ‘THE A-LOOP THEORY’

alooptingsHuddersfield born Emcee/Producer Asaviour aka Savvy has single handily cemented himself as one of the strongest artists within the UK Hip Hop scene today. With a fresh original approach to rhyming, an untouchable flow with a twist on content and how it’s delivered sets him apart from most of his more "traditional" counterparts. In 2007 he branched out with his own label “Saving Grace Music” to showcase "the future sounds" that were progressing from his stable. His productions skills place him far ahead of the pack and have taken him out of the hip hop scene allowing him to collaborate with a number of major artists in the music industry for instance: Claudia Kennaugh, Neon Hitch, Kevin Walls, Athlete and Supa Dark and many more..

    PETE PHILLY & PERQUISITE

Perq, 100% surely my favourite beat producer in the world, and golden boy Pete Philly have been active since 2003. In 2004 the first collaboration EP, Mindstate, was released. It hit the world with a bang. Each track on the tape represents its own mindstate. The Mellow track is exactly what you want to hear in a mellow mood and Gratefull even ended up in my personal selection of all time favourites. In January 2007 the Re-Mindstate tape was released, the remixed version of Mindstate, to me a big miss. But in the end of the same year they absolutely nailed it with the new album Mystery Repeats. The very succesfull album lead to a European tour which ended December 2008, but did they ever come to Britain? No they didn't, it's about time then!

    LOWKEY “DEAR LISTENER” ALBUM REVIEW

lowkey-dear-listener"He’s dope! One of the best rappers in the UK" Now you’d be pretty stoked if anyone said that about you, right? Well imagine how it’d feel having that accolade thrust up on you by none other than Wu-Tang favourite, Ghostface Killah. Yessir, Lowkey is definitely big in the game right now, whether its from getting high praises from veteran emcees, or in voicing his criticism of the latest wave of Palestinian slaughter in Gaza, his is a voice that is determined to be heard and with good reason. His debut album, "Dear Listener" drops at the end of this month and it looks like it's going to be setting the bar pretty high for the year's future releases.
