ANTHONY LISTER

I’ve been a fan of this artist for a while now. There is something about the mood, simplicity, originality and pure genious of Anthony Lister’s work that proves our generation has moved to forefront of the Art world. We did an article a few weeks back with Melbourne based jewellery creator Hayley Mei which was just a small taster of what our generation of this nation have to offer.

I sometimes feel the creative talent that pours out of Australia sometimes goes un-noticed to the majority of the world. Thats why I chose to do this feature, focusing on the work and life of Brisbane-born, Brooklyn-residing painter and installation artist, Anthony Lister.

At the considerably young age of 27, Anthony Lister has exhibited his work all over the globe including Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Not to mention solo exhibitions in London and New York City.

Images of Listers’ family are often used in his art-work but the main influence of his recent work is quite obvious: Comic books. Mainly Superheros & Supervillians, focusing on the most popular characters of Marvel & DC comics. Lister’s work often shows an influence from a number of genres including street art, expressionism and pop-art. Often dealing with subject matter from society and popular culture reflecting the less glamorous aspects of it, he draws themes from the “misguided role models” that result from it.

Lister has said in the past that “Australians are raised by Americans on TV” (that sounds a familiar story over here on our UK shores..) and that “TV is the contemporary mode of meditation”. His children have had a profound impact on the way he creates his art. Lister is also noted to have said that he is not trying to make a statement with his art, just reflect the world around him.

You can check out some of his work below, which I feel creates an intense amount of inspiration.
