SPEAKERS CORNER/END OF THE WEAK MC CHALLENGE 2ND HEAT.

Posted by Jen on 30.06.2008, 18:26

Sometimes it doesn’t really register with people that we do in fact have a strong Hip Hop culture here in the UK. It is fully developed & mature.

Our MCs can stand up lyrically with the world’s finest spoken word artists. We have a long history of DJ, Bboy & Beatbox Champions. We have some of the world’s leading Graffiti artist coming from our shores. UK Hip Hop sections can be found in record shops all across Europe. Even the industry here are starting to catch on (and they are always the last to know)

Proving the point. Here we are. End Of The Weak International MC Champion title holders! In our first season of the worlds leading International MC Challenge the UK takes home the trophy! Thanks to UK Champion season one Stig Of The Dump http://www.myspace.com/stigdastardly

HOT CLUB DE PARIS

Posted by Henry on 28.06.2008, 19:28

Listen to Hot Club De Paris. Another band from Liverpool who I’m plugging, but as far as I’m concerned this is no bad thing. They have a new album out called Live at Dead Lake, chock full of catchy and upbeat songs which are actually well written and insightful, not just cheerful nothingness. It was also produced by Brian Deck, the same dude who produces Modest Mouse, so you know shit’s tight. Their Minutemen cover is a belter, as is their single and my song of the week Hey Housebrick. Check their myspace out for a listen, and they have some nice videos on youtube

BIRDY NAM NAM LIVE @ KOKO, WIN TICKETS!

Posted by Jen on 25.06.2008, 14:12

Birdy Nam Nam are more than a DJ crew or more than just a gang of b-boys with a lot of time on their hands. They won the DMCs and then dismissed it as “for nerds”.

This four man crew make music so musical you’d swear it was music being played live – they use the deck as an instrument so much they’ll play the xylophone, isolate one note and then press it to vinyl so they can scratch it up. Movie soundtracks, world tours, dope albums and theatre scores, they’ve done all this and more.

Posted by Jen on 21.06.2008, 11:13

Groundbreaking, charismatic, stylish, distinctive - these are just some of the words that have been used to describe Lyrics Born.

As one of the best selling independent hip-hop solo artists of our time, he has risen from an underground MC to a major Hip-Hop icon on the national and international touring circuit, and has earned the reputation as one of the most exciting and consistent in the game.

THE ELEMENTZ “CRUSHMODE” ALBUM REVIEW

Posted by Jen on 13.06.2008, 11:07

There are those of you out there who may not think of the Midlands as the sort of place that’s brimming with home-grown hip hop talent, but you would be wrong, so very, very wrong. Because along with Robin Hood and Su Pollard, the city of Nottingham has given us such musical luminaries as Cappo, P-Brothers, Karizma and, of course, the Elementz.

The latter are back with their new compilation, “Crush Mode”, featuring all the usual audio audacity and beat bravado that we have come to expect from Liati and Zoutr since they dropped their debut back in 2005. And as usual they come fully mob handed with a ton of guest speakers, including Skinnyman, Scor-Zay-Zee, TB and Big Cakes.

SKANDAL EP REVIEW

Posted by Jen on 08.05.2008, 15:54

So here is the latest offering from the deep, dark belly of UK hip hop. Skandal has blasted on the scene with his debut EP, and if this is what the future has in store for hip hop, then you purists are in for a shock.

BOW AND ARROW ARE INCREDIBLE

Posted by Henry on 05.05.2008, 01:46

I just got back from a show at the Old Blue Last, Annihilation Time were supposed to play but for visa reasons couldn’t make it. Luckily, I hadn’t bought a ticket and only found out about the show today, but for all those Annihilation Time fans who had their hopes up, it’s gotta be a bummer.

BLISS N ESO “FLYING COLOURS” ALBUM REVIEW

Posted by Jen on 01.05.2008, 17:24

Its taken me a while to get my shit together to write a review of Bliss N Eso‘s “Flying Colours”. This is for one reason, and one reason only, its absolutely fucking fantastic. I jumped on the Australian hip hop band wagon about two years ago and have since discovered some of my favourite current hip hop acts, one of which being the mighty Bliss N Eso.

As their third album, it is full to the brim with diversity. Perfectly chosen samples work like magic alongside Bliss N Eso‘s rhyme schemes, bringing every track to life, giving it its own beat, its own feel, and giving you the need to get the fuck up and dance, tap your feet, shout along to the choruses.. You get the picture.

POLAR BEAR GIG REVIEW

Posted by Jen on 26.04.2008, 20:38

Polar Bear @ Colston Hall, Bristol.
    April 20th 2008

Polar Bear were gripping from the off. The quintet, made up of drums, double bass, two saxophones and a laptop, entertained the small gathering in Bristol’s Colston Hall with devastating panache. In fact, the gig took place in the bar, with about 10 rows of seats and a smattering of people gathered at the sides. And it was the perfect setting; intimate, friendly and mesmerizing all at the same time.

SICK OF IT ALL & WISDOM IN CHAINS LIVE REVIEW

Posted by Jen on 26.04.2008, 18:25

Sick of It All + Wisdom in Chains live @ The White Rabbit, Plymouth.
    April 16th 2008.

After an intro song filled with guitar solos and a lot of anticipation from an eager crowd, Mad Joe started to pound his vocals into the first song, “Liar”.

Fast drumming and awesome guitar riffs filled The White Rabbit and the crowd went off. The second song, “Dragging Me Down”, had the crowd going off and fighting for the mic with an awesome sing-along. The guitars chugged and halfway through an awesome solo kicked in. The song had a real Blood For Blood feel to it.

WEEZER RELEASE NEW ALBUM

Posted by Jen on 24.04.2008, 14:59

I had full intentions of copying the press blurb for the release of the new Weezer album, (I say ‘new’, its not out until July) but it didn’t really do them justice.

As one of the biggest and most influential bands of the last ten years, they are set to release the third self-titled album in their six-album history.
