GAVIN WATSON Q&A

gw5British Photographer Gavin Watson has taken an array of diverse images in his career which has spanned over 30 years. Particularly well-known for the book ‘Skins’ released a few years ago now, these images, amongst many others have become strikingly significant and historically valuable. More recently working for magazines such as ArtRocker & Vice, and photographing bands such as Gallows, we of course jumped at the chance for a brief Q&A with the man himself..

THE MISLEADING SUPERPOWER

Recently I made 10 anti America posters. This was before Obama won the elections, am a bit late with posting them on S43. Here’s a link to all 10. It was a situationist international project, which practicly comes down to making a strong political poster series in a very short time with almost no money. These were done in 2 hours and printed for free by nicking a tutor’s account login. Hope you like it. They will be hanging in Club Canvas (Amsterdam), 2 will be published in the Mexican Chakota Mag. and my for the rest I promote them online.

BOOGIE

BOOGIE A friend of mine from Lisboa first put me onto Boogie and I was instantly into his photos.

Hailing from Belgrade in Serbia, Boogie shoots powerful black and white images of the less than pretty aspects of city life. His projects cover gang culture, drug use and skinheads amongst other things. Not the most original sounding content, but once you see his photos you will not feel like an outsider looking in, but like an observer who is there with the people in the pictures. There’s not many photographers I like, so when I find one I feel compelled to share. Website here yo.

HONET’S NEW WEBSITE IS UP!

HONET For those in the know, this is a mighty exciting development and for those who don’t, allow me to explain.

Honet is one of the most innovative graffiti writers Paris has ever seen, but instead of giving up on what he loves he has channeled the dedication graffiti requires into exploring the tunnels beneath Paris, the catacombs and a variety of other imposing locations seen by few and documented by fewer. It also has photos of a train journey he took from Russia and through the East earlier this year as well as his art and general hi-jinx.
Go here and have a good ol’ snoop around.

Deciding to get some info on this project I thought I may aswell do a little bit of Q&A and introduce you to Dynamic Style.

BURLESQUE OF NORTH AMERICA

Up until a few years ago, the only things I knew about Minneapolis were that Tom Waits had written a tune called “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” and it was the place where Prince was born. But other than that, the Midwest played a very small part in my life. Then Atmosphere exploded on to the hip hop scene, with Rhymesayers and Doomtree following close behind, and it wasn’t long before everything in my stereo was a product of the Twin Cities.

‘CAN’ YOU SPOT THE NEW ART SECTION

Dface super size can's

London’s D-face was responsible for some urban re-landscaping in the shape some massive spray can shaped concrete, i heard that several were plonked randomly about town. i wonder who was quicker at removing them, the city council or some art thieves trying to cash in?
